the positive power of what you can do yourself

"DIY" (do it yourself) is an abbreviation seen often in magazines and on the Internet -- many people love to make things:  socks, pictures, computers, toys, music, fruit preserves, quilts, businesses, sidewalk art, face moisturizing products, Pad Thai, coffee mugs, wooden trunks, dance routines, coats, muffin tins, and more....

On You Tube I watched (and listened to) a video titled, "Fleetwood Mac 1973 Midnight Special" -- it's two songs in a row, no talking, played on live TV -- 9 minutes.  This iteration of Fleetwood Mac is post-Peter Green, and pre-Lindsey-Buckingham-and-Stevie-Nicks -- an island moment in the band's journey, with a unique energy, and cool.

As they play, they are doing everything themselves:  playing the instruments, singing, there are no drum-machines or computers or lip-synching or blue screen or pre-recorded whatever -- Christine McVie plays maracas during one of the numbers -- with both hands she holds multiple maracas, shaking, shaking, driving the sound and the rhythm -- one Commenter called it "a bouquet" of maracas....

The work and stamina and power this all takes:  it would wear someone out by the end of a concert....  (And don't ask me about the drummer because frankly I don't know what's goin' on, there....)

4 You Tube Comments:

William Mark Dyer
------------- Christine McVie needs more maracas.

Harold Francis
------------------ LMAO

Michael McClure
---------- Wow.  I love the way Mick Fleetwood and John McVie were happy to keep themselves in the background of this band and remain the heart and soul.

Jeffrey Krupa
------------------ That's the "engine room" that has kept FM going all this time!

Tuesday of this week Bob Dylan's song "Crash On The Levee (Down In The Flood)" [a.k.a. "Down In The Flood (Crash On The Levee)"] was blogged here -- on You Tube, Bob Dylan himself is somewhat scarce but then that just forces the Dylan-Energy elsewhere, and you find lots of performances of his songs by other people. ...

It's always fascinating -- and sometimes off-putting -- to see these people who do a performance in -- like -- a room, and put it on the Internet -- viewing it, a person can feel sort of -- intrusive -- like, is it OK to see this?  Is it private?  Should I not look?  I mean, it's in their private living space -- is it polite?

---------------

Many performances of "Crash on the Levee" on You Tube, by different people and bands; another Dylan song covered by many You Tube musicians is "One More Cup Of Coffee."

There's a performance of "Crash on the Levee" by a young lady named Jaye.  Looking up at the camera, she tells the audience what she's going to do:  sing Bob Dylan's Crash on the Levee.

I almost turned it off -- like, what is this person doing?  She goes over to get her guitar -- she's in a little room with a white Christmas tree on the viewer's right, and a keyboard on the left, and a small tan dresser at the back wall.

When she gets the guitar, you see that she has a wrap, or cast, on one leg -- she -- gets back to the chair -- her hair is brunette, and she's wearing a pink shirt, I'm thinking, this is not going to be good, am going to play something else... and then she started playing:  Whoa!

Introductions:  not her main talent.

Playing guitar and singing:  main Talent alert!

She brought an open-faced, 21st-Century, You-Tube-uploader pluck and verve to her interpretation of the song.

I've listened to her recording several times, now.
