Coal Miner's Daughter is a movie about the life of Loretta Lynn, an American country music singer.
The performance of every actor and actress in it is top-notch. For the duration of the movie, you yourself are "in" the country music business - just, all in.
Even if you previously had no relation to it - watching this film, you're part of this world.
That's one of the functions of art - to share human experience.
There's a scene in the movie where Loretta has just returned to the family home, from a tour. She and her husband are getting into bed and a lonely phone rings, downstairs.
Doolittle gets up and goes down and picks it up, saying, "It's one o'clock in the morning, what the hell do-ya want?"
- "No, Loretta ain't here, lady, she's on the road - how the hell did ya get this number, anyway?! "
- "Hey, quit that cryin,' lady - quit it, and I'll give Loretta your message. Yeah. All right. You liked her last album a lot" [reaches over and gets a piece of paper and a pen] ...
..."She loves you, too." [He listens, and sighs.] "She'll pray for you, too."
"Lady, you're gonna have to quit that cryin'. Get yourself some sleep. It's gonna be better in the mornin'. I guarantee."
[He listens a few seconds, and starts laughing, gently...]
"No. No - you didn't wake me up." [laughs a little more]
"Uh-uh. That's right." [laughs] "There's a lot of lonesome people in the world."
Sigh.
"Good-night."
