on the Evening Shift

a post-modern plain poem

-------------------------
"security guard"

The day's last light softens,
Heading for evening's darkness
And through a clear window
The cat notices,
And prowls watchfully
Window to window.

Years of experience
Living with his humans
Have shown him the security
And reliability
Of his home,
Yet he sharpens and polishes
Regularly
His feline Watchfulness Skills.

"I am; therefore, I watch"
Is the cat's natural motto,
Acted upon
And acted out
As consistently as
Sunrise occurring once every twenty-four hours.

Checking
Monitoring
Watching, listening,
Washing,
Prowling, intent,
Focused;
Feline-focused, with
Whiskers alert,
Sometimes askew,
Attuned,
Naturally.
