Two days ago I was putting in, here, a little scene from Manhattan, a film directed by Woody Allen.  (He also starred in it, and co-wrote the script with Marshall Brickman.)

They have that light, shimmery dialogue -- Nazis were going to "march in New Jersey" --

"Really biting satire is always better than physical force."

"But physical force is always better with Nazis."...

Today, in 2017, we have some of these folks -- American citizens -- who apparently really want to -- march around -- and be -- act -- Nazi-ish... or something.

Woody Allen's Manhattan came out in 1979.  So that's -- 38 years ago.  Does society naturally experience some kind of -- "Wave Of Weirdness" every 35 - 40 years, where some people want to do things like this?

My memory from that era was Nazis wanting to demonstrate, not in New Jersey, but in Skokie, Illinois.  That name sticks in my mind.

And the idea was, No, we're not going to let "Nazis" take over America or anything, but we don't ban their free speech because free speech is in the Constitution (Bill of Rights?) for all Americans.

("I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it!"  People used to quote that, when I was little -- it was a phrase you would hear...Marlo Thomas said it in an episode of "That Girl.")

In 1979 the idea of Nazis demonstrating someplace publicly, in America, was 97% weird and odd, and 3% scary.

Today, Nazis demonstrating seems 89% weird and odd, and 11 percent scary.  IMHO

-------------- Mitt Romney

today said that Pres. Trump's response to events in Charlottesville "caused racists to rejoice, minorities to weep, and the vast heart of America to mourn."  On Facebook, Romney called on the president to apologize for his remarks....
