the cameras were not working, and the guards were asleep

John Dyer Painting. Summer Sunlight, Holywell Bay

Is it asking a lot of us, to believe that story?
When Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his jail cell last August 10th, not only were the cameras not working and the guards asleep, but Epstein's cellmate was somehow not in the cell.

Since Mr. Epstein's "death" (disappearance?) nearly a year ago, many people Commenting on the Internet have stated that they don't believe the official story, which is that he killed himself.
"Jeffrey Epstein did not kill himself" is the frequently read declaration.

The belief (or theory) is that Epstein had been running a sex trafficking operation catering to the wealthy and powerful, and he was murdered to keep him from naming names.

Prosecutors want to seize financier Jeffrey Epstein's NYC mansion ...

Now that his confidante/partner-in-crime Ghislaine Maxwell has been arrested (pleaded not guilty; bail denied), Commenters worry that she too will disappear before she can name names.  The Comments go something like this:

"Ghislaine Maxwell didn't kill herself."

and

"Ghislaine Maxwell did not commit suicide next week."

Hmmm.  Beasts of Twitter; wags of the Internet.

Aren't there professional ladies of the evening who would provide the social interaction desired, and then these strange alleged procurers wouldn't have to pester/coerce/kidnap underage girls?

Special occasions-Commissions-HRH Prince Andrew portrait by Dayo ...

In one of the articles, Ghislaine Maxwell was quoted as saying of the high school and junior high age people she was bossing around and corrupting:  "These girls are nothing."

This made me think of a passage in Jane Austen's 1815 novel, Emma:

-------------- >  There was nothing in all this either to astonish or interest, and it caught Emma's attention only as it united with the subject which already engaged her mind.  The contrast between Mrs. Churchill's importance in the world, and Jane Fairfax's, struck her; one was every thing, the other nothing -- and she sat musing on the difference of woman's destiny....
