and anytime you feel the pain, refrain

One day when Wilson Pickett was at FAME recording studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, he and Duane Allman stayed behind when the other musicians went out to lunch.

Duane Allman said to Wilson Pickett, "You know, you ought to record 'Hey Jude'" and -- as one of the Swampers (Muscle Shoals rhythm section) says in retrospect -- "Southern rock -- was born!"

On Google, type in

"Hey Jude" Wilson Pickett

and press 'Play."

That was a -- very very good idea, Duane. ...

When this version of "Hey Jude" begins, the string-sound has that country-blues hint...and Pickett's voice is different from Paul McCartney's -- yet the M. Shoals rendition is very strongly faithful to the Beatles' original recording...begins with the same quiet, prayer-like atmosphere....

One of the things I like when I hear Wilson Pickett sing is, his voice -- his sound -- has the quality of intimate communication -- sounds like he knows stuff.
