big bucket of crazy

I never knew you could call 9-1-1 from a cell phone that's been "deactivated."  That is something new I learned from reading news stories about the Turpin family case in Perris, California.

The media has dubbed it the "House of Horrors" -- ordinarily we might think, 'Oh there goes the media, sensationalizing the story with a flamboyant nickname,' but in this case it seems like the name is appropriate.

This story is difficult to get your mind around.  We hear news of child abuse and most of the time we skip it for two reasons -- 1) save our sanity, and 2) nothing we can do about it, leave it to the professionals to do their jobs.

(And in a sense, we are "doing something about it" because our tax dollars pay those professionals to provide the care and counseling necessary to try to recover from terrible trauma and we vote into office political leaders who make laws against child abuse, and put more laws and rules in place to support the original law -- for example, requiring public school personnel and medical people to report any signs that a child might be abused....)

So we can and do "Do Something" about it, through the standards set in a civil and decent society -- a democratic republic.

-------------------- So usually I don't read or listen to news stories like this, unless it's to see & make sure the children have been removed from the toxic situation and are now in safety and being taken care of.

This story, I read more about it because at first I was so dumbfounded -- I was sort of -- um, I don't think there is a word for this...you have to come up with a new word.

Riverside County prosecutor Mike Hestrin called the treatment of the Turpin children "depravity."  Someone else said "malice"; today at work someone applied the word "vicious."  That's a good one.  That fits.

When I hear a horrific news story, the first two words that pop into my mind are "stupid" and "crazy" but really, those two words may not apply.
(The word I'm hesitant to come up with is "evil.")

          Gracie Lee

~~  we had religious wackos like this who lived down the street from us.  2 of their kids actually ran away and a third killed herself.  I really don't like how uber religious ppl think they need to have this dictatorship over their kids.  This is 1 of the reasons I despise religion.  It has manipulated and twisted more ppl throughout history for bad and not good

~~  Were the kids being homeschooled or did they go to public school?
          Monster 12255

~~  probably homeschooled or else someone would've caught this
          Pablo Sanchez

~~  Homeschooled, other reports about this seem to indicate they registered their residence as a school with the "father" as a principal or something.
I'm not entirely sure how home schooling is even still a thing.
          Eric Ling

~~  This is why homeschooling should at least be monitored if it's still going to exist.  It's too easy for crazy parents to have complete control over their children's lives and not allow any contact or socialization with the outside world.

~~  Look at the parents' eyes.  They look so dark, and wrong.  It makes me feel unsafe.
